Watching a bald eagle soar overhead is a breathtaking sight.  Bald Eagles have very been active in the area in the past few weeks!  Other raptors have also been moving around in the Little Sioux River Valley.  The large Rough-legged Hawks are especially impressive as they hover over the prairie while hunting.

All of this raptor activity comes just in time for the annual Bald Eagle Watch on Saturday, March 7 at the Prairie Heritage Center.  This event is a come-and-go opportunity to observe eagles throughout the day.  The O’Brien County Naturalist as well as members of the Iowa Lakes Audubon Society will be on hand to help you spot and identify eagles.  A car-pool field excursion into the valley to check out a couple of eagle “hot-spots” may also occur during the day.

This year there are a two special presentations which you won’t want to miss!  At 11:00 a.m. the dedication of Iowa’s newest Bird Conservation Area and Important Bird Area will occur.  Representatives from the Iowa DNR, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Nature Conservancy, the Iowa Audubon Society and others will be on hand to take part in the ceremony and will be available to speak with participants.  Come and join in this long-awaited designation of the special prairie habitat in the Little Sioux Valley watershed!

At 2:00 p.m., Christina Roelofs will be bringing a LIVE bald eagle to the event!  Bring your camera and take advantage of this amazing opportunity to see a majestic bald eagle from an arm’s length!  Christina will talk about the bird’s special adaptations and give other information about their current population status.

There will be also be learning activities for people of all ages and a surprise photo opportunity!

Bring the family for an enjoyable day of viewing eagles and learning more about them.  The Prairie Heritage Center is located just one mile off of Hwy 10 at 4931 Yellow Ave.  Stop by throughout the day from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
